Stocks Rally as Investors Shrug Off Consumers' Concerns

Real VisionMay 13, 2022
Markets rebounded sharply Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average on track for its first positive trading session after six consecutive down days. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said engineering a soft landing would involve “some pain,” as the central bank remains on track for 50-basis-point rate hikes in June and July. U.S. consumer sentiment fell to its lowest in more than a decade, as April data from the University of Michigan survey showed a drop from 65.2 to 59.1. The average per-gallon price of gasoline hit a new high and continues to weigh on the minds of Americans. And the geopolitical situation promises more constraints on key energy and food supplies. Tony Greer, founder of TG Macro, joins Warren Pies, founder of 3Fourteen Research, to discuss the energy market’s impact on the broader market. We also hear from Alex Gurevich, who says there’s a 0% chance of a soft landing. Want to submit questions? Drop them right here on the Exchange: https://rvtv.io/3NfvoGC. This Revolution Will Be Peaceful and Prosperous
Working from home offers employees more daily flexibility, less time commuting, greater job satisfaction, the opportunity to save money, and the ability to boost productivity. Recent data suggest the “hybrid” model combines benefits of working from home with those of going to the office, with an average productivity increase of 5%. And both employees and employers favor it. According to Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics at Stanford University, not only is remote work here to stay. But workers are likely to quit their jobs if they’re told to return to the office full time. In a far-ranging conversation, Bloom and Jim Bianco, founder and president of Bianco Research, talk about what work-from-home means for the redesign of office space, management, the real estate market, and cultural diversity. It’s one of the most fascinating prevailing trends with abundant implications, and it remains underexplored. Bloom and Bianco tread new ground here. Recorded on May 2, 2022.

Here's the Good News About a Recession
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has logged eight consecutive losing weeks, but it’s leading the U.S. equity indexes to the upside today with a gain of more than 2%. Perhaps investors are looking at stocks with Jared Dillian’s style of optimism. “If we get a recession, and it looks like we will,” notes Dillian, “it will be a much easier trading environment than what we’ve been dealing with. Fed easing policy is always easier than Fed tightening policy.” Dillian, author of The Daily Dirtnap, joins Real Vision’s Ash Bennington to make his case for a developing risk-on environment. We also hear from Francis “The Market Sniper” Hunt about Bitcoin and its correlation to old-school financial asset prices. Want to submit questions?
