PORTLAND, Maine --

WEX (NYSE: WEX), a leading financial technology service provider, today announced it has appointed new leadership in Latin America. Seasoned fintech professional Marcelo Geraldi Velloso has joined WEX’s São Paulo office as the company’s new managing director of Latin America.

“Marcelo brings 25 years of leadership experience in banking, financial services and e-commerce in several Latin American countries,” said Nicola Morris, chief corporate development officer at WEX. “Marcelo has a strong track record developing and growing businesses and we are confident that his expertise and knowledge will enhance our business in this dynamic and fast-moving market.”

In his new position, Velloso will put his expertise to work streamlining operations while continuing to scale the company’s payment offerings in the Latin American market. Velloso has held an executive leadership role in several Latin American countries. Prior to joining WEX, he served as chief operating officer of MadeiraMadeira in Curitiba, Brazil; as vice president of Atento in São Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico; and as executive director of retail bank and wealth management at HSBC México.

During his nearly 16-year tenure at HSBC, Velloso rose through the ranks, ultimately managing 11,000 people across more than 1,000 retail branches in consumer, retail banking, wealth & asset management and insurance. There, he led both the HSBC product management and card issuing operation to consumers and small and medium enterprises, as well as the merchant acquiring business. He has a strong client orientation and has built several high-performance teams throughout his career.

“I am thrilled to join WEX, a global financial technology service provider known for its innovation in the payments space,” said Velloso. “The market presents huge opportunities for a business that has experienced growth and is well positioned to capture future opportunity in Brazil and LATAM. I’m excited to expand on the great foundation they have built. ”

Additionally, Velloso has served on the board of Visa Latin America and PROSA, a payments/mobile payments processing company in Mexico.
